What Does the following Ultrasound Scan Result Mean?

I had an ultrasound today and there is a comment in the report about kidney BOTH KIDNEYS.: right kidney measures 10.8×4.3cm. left kidney measures 11.4×4.6cm. Both kidneys are normal in shape, size, and position. Outline of both kidneys are smooth and well demarcated. No mass or cysts seen in either kidney. No evidence of renal parenchymal disease. Corticomedullary demarcation intact. No evidence of calculus seen in either kidney. MINIMAL FULLNESS SEEN IN THE COLLECTING SYSTEM OF BOTH KIDNEYS, POSSIBILITY OF INFECTION CAN NOT BE RULED OUT.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi the ultrasound indicates that your kidneys are normal but is inconclusive about whether there is infection in the collecting system. Now an ultrasound cannot tell accurately if there is an infection and the extent of infection only a CT scan can tell. Do you have any symptoms? Abdominal pain, fever, burning during urination, blood in urine? Are you diabetic? A simple way to detect if you have an infection would be to get a urine examination done - urine routine exam and microscopy. This urine test will be able to tell if an infection is there without the need for a CT scan. You can request your doctor to run a urine test and if it shows infection you can take a course of antibiotics which will help settle the infection. I hope this helps. Take care :)
